| Grade 6 | | | | Sixth Grade Team | The sixth grade offers a rigorous curriculum in reading, math, and
Minnesota State Standards. This approach helps prepare the students for the
transition to junior high.
Reader’s Workshop
Sixth
grade is implementing Reader’s Workshop this year. Class begins with a
focused mini lesson for the whole class. This is followed by individual
work time in which students are reading independently and reflecting on
what they are reading. Some students will also be involved in book
clubs or in small guided oral reading groups focused at the individual
student's instructional level with lessons designed to meet students’
needs. The workshop concludes with a share time in which students
reflect on their work that day. Students also have a skills block
session to focus on vocabulary, phonics, phonemic awareness, spelling
etc.
Math
The math curriculum is the Connected
Mathematics Project. This curriculum is organized around mathematical
"big ideas", clusters of important related mathematical concepts,
processes, ways of thinking, skills and problem solving strategies,
which are studied in depth with the development of deep understanding
as the goal.
Writer’s Workshop
Students are working
towards becoming fluent proficient writers in a variety of genres
including memoir, literary nonfiction, persuasive writing, and response
to literature.
Standards Classes
Students rotate
through two classes during this first hour time unless they are in special education or the Excel program. The two classes include a year
long service learning curriculum called Urban Stewards taught by Ms.
Coyle in which students choose an environmental issue in the community
to study and then design and carry out an action project to address the
problem. Ms. Butler teaches a variety of science topics during this
time. Ms. Welsh and Ms. Osaulenko work with students that need additional academic support with instruction in math skills during this time.
Special Projects and Field Trips
The biggest
field trip sixth graders take is the three day trip in the fall to The
Audubon Center of the Northwoods in Sandstone, MN. They also go on an educational riverboat trip on the Mississippi River and to a water park at the end of the
year.

Rally at the State Capitol
 | | | |
 | | BCE 6th graders at The State Capitol | | After studying and writing about the issue of global warming, students
visited the Minnesota State Capitol for a Youth Lobby Day. Their day
began with a rally in the rotunda with a few hundred middle, high
school and college students in support of legislation to enact higher
efficiency standards for cars being made and sold in Minnesota. The
remainder of the morning was spent in a training for how to effectively
lobby lawmakers on this bill. In the afternoon, students met with
State Representatives Sheldon Johnson, Tim Mahoney and State Senators
Mee Moua. Students were eloquent in expressing the importance of the
legislation in protecting our environmental. The day was a real life
application of the skills Battle Creek Environmental Magnet students
have been learning about being environmental advocates. |
