The sixth grade offers a rigorous curriculum in reading, math, and Minnesota State Standards. This approach helps prepare the students for the transition to junior high.

Reader’s Workshop
Sixth grade is implementing Reader’s Workshop this year. Class begins with a focused mini lesson for the whole class. This is followed by individual work time in which students are reading independently and reflecting on what they are reading. Some students will also be involved in book clubs or in small guided oral reading groups focused at the individual student's instructional level with lessons designed to meet students’ needs. The workshop concludes with a share time in which students reflect on their work that day. Students also have a skills block session to focus on vocabulary, phonics, phonemic awareness, spelling etc.

Math The math curriculum is the Connected Mathematics Project. This curriculum is organized around mathematical "big ideas", clusters of important related mathematical concepts, processes, ways of thinking, skills and problem solving strategies, which are studied in depth with the development of deep understanding as the goal.

working towards becoming fluent proficient writers in a variety of genres including memoir, literary nonfiction, persuasive writing, and response to literature.

Standards Classes
Students rotate through two classes during this first hour time unless they are in special education or the Excel program. The two classes include a year long service learning curriculum called Urban Stewards taught by Ms. Coyle in which students choose an environmental issue in the community to study and then design and carry out an action project to address the problem. Ms. Batcheller teaches a variety of science topics during this time. Ms. Krzmarzick works with students in the Excel program and provides additional instruction in math skills during this time. Ms.Pearson works with the students with IEP's that require additional academic support.

Special Projects and Field Trips
The biggest field trip sixth graders take is the three day trip in the fall to The Audubon Center of the Northwoods in Sandstone, MN. They also go on a downhill skiing trip in winter, on an educational riverboat trip on the Mississippi River and to a water park at the end of the year.
