My philosophy

I am the full-time speech pathologist in the building. This is my 22nd year working in the St. Paul schools. Before coming to Battle Creek, I worked at Daytons Bluff for 14 years. I previously worked in the schools in Winona.

My caseload consists of students with articulation errors, language disorders, fluency and voice problems. These students are from grades Kindergarten to six including students from the autism program and students who are hearing impaired.

I often screen students for the classroom teachers and parents if there is a concern and work on interventions to decide if a referral needs to be made for Speech/Language testing.

Categories of Speech Concerns: Articulation: Errors in production of speech sounds. Some of these sounds are maturational and should develop on their own. Therapy is provided when these errors interfere with communication and do not develop appropriately. Language: Errors may include difficulty following directions, knowing basic concepts, using appropriate grammatical structures, answering "wh" questions and story comprehension, understanding and using vocabulary, and using appropriate pragmatic skills which include listening, taking turns, and topic maintenance. Fluency (stuttering): Difficulty communicating without experiencing abnormal hesitations, word and sound repetitions, prolongations. Often stuttering is accompanied by evidence of struggle and behaviors which appear to help the person to be fluent. It can be cyclical and can be inconsistent in varying situations. Voice: Diagnosis of vocal nodules or evidence of vocal abuse causing inappropriate voice quality such as hoarseness.
