The Tree Trust worked with the Battle Creek Elementary School during the 2007-2008 school year to organize a Green Team, which created a landscape plan for the school. The culmination activity was on Tuesday 22, 2007 in which outdoor learning areas were developed for the school. Every student had a hand in planting trees and shrubs on the school grounds, and the students interacted with the Tree Trust's "Our Town Trees" exhibit
to learn about the value of natural areas in their community. This event was sponsored by the Medtronic Foundation.
There were also two new classes in the outdoor area that were created. One is a bird
observation area where tree benches and five bird feeders for the
outdoor classrooms. The other is an area inside the courtyard under a pine tree where people can gather. Trees were also planted to provide a wind break on the west side of the school.
Paul Wirzbicki was the Tree Trust Program Coordinator, and worked with the school to organize this event. Students and teachers are able to use these areas throughout the school year. Tree Trust is a non-profit corporation whose mission is to improve the community environment and has been doing this since 1992 helping schools build outdoor learning areas.
