Student Wellness and The School Nurse
“Healthy Students = Better Learners”
Introduction:
Hello, my name is Karen Evans I am the nurse here at Battle Creek
Elementary. In the past I have only been in the building part time, but
**new** this year I am here everyday from 8:45am until 4:00 pm. I work
with the staff and students of Battle Creek Elementary to decrease
illness and absenteeism in order to help students reach their full
learning potential. It is extremely important that the nurse is made
aware of any serious health conditions that effects your children so
that school can be a safe environment for everyone.
General Notes:
- The goal of the Student Wellness department of St. Paul Public Schools,
including the school nurse, is to protect the health and safety of our
students and enhance the educational process by the modification of
health related barriers to learning.
- The nurse strives to assist
students to identify their health problems, problem-solve to find a
solution, learn independence and self-management and succeed in school.
- The school nurse’s focus is to keep students in school and in class.
- The school nurse helps some students learn how to manage their chronic
illness so they don’t miss class, and teaches other students to manage
minor stomachaches, headaches etc. so that they can stay in class.
- The nurse encourages students to provide self-care for minor cuts and scrapes using soap and water.
- The nurse also teaches the importance of getting enough sleep each
night, and that we need to eat breakfast regularly for energy.
- The nurse works hard to encourage good hand washing to decrease illness
and absenteeism- for both students and staff, before snacks, before
lunch, and after using the bathroom.
- The nurse does an annual
vision & hearing screening on the kindergarten and first grade
students, and vision screening on 5th graders.
- The nurse provides
medication administration & management to students who have a
prescription from their doctor along with Doctor’s orders, which must
be renewed each year in conjunction with written parent permission. Any
questions please see the nurse.
- The nurse provides education and in-service training to staff as needed in regards to medical issues in our school.
- The nurse tracks immunizations and ensures that all students attending
Battle Creek are in compliance with the state immunization laws.
