| Welcome to Fifth Grade! |  | The fifth grade focuses on whole group instruction in all areas of the
curriculum to meet the needs of the our students. An ELL teacher, a
literacy coach, a LD teacher all team with mainstream teachers to
provide instruction in reading, math, and writing. American history and
environmental science skills and concepts are integrated into the three
main subject areas while meeting the Minnesota Education Standards for
fifth grade.
Fifth grade is a wonderful time in the life of
every child. They are eager to learn new things, make new friends and
prove to themselves that they can handle more responsibility. We work
on public speaking and presentation skills using technology ie:
podcasting, Powerpoint, AppleWorks Presentation. They also use the
computers to research their topics along with written materials and
personal interviews. They are taught reciprocal teaching and learning
skills. All students get the opportunity to take leadership roles.
Our
job as fifth grade teachers is to ensure that our students not only
succeed with the curriculum, but believe that they can be successful in
whatever they do. Fifth grade uses "Everyday Mathematics" which is a
thinking and problem
solving approach to mathematics. It corresponds to the math standards
and prepares students well for the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment
(MCA) tests that are taken in April. We strive to balance the riger of the academics with many educational experiences.

involved with three grants that supply funding for
field trips, outside speakers and classroom materials. Computers are
used daily in the classroom and in the computer lab for projects that
correspond to and enhance the curriculum. We especially try to develop
in students a sense of pride in themselves and in what they are capable
of achieving.
