The Learning Center serves special education students with social,
emotional, behavior and learning difficulties. To meet our student's
needs our program has a high staff to student ratio.
Our program
receives services for speech/language, adaptative physical education,
social work and occupational therapy as determined by each individual
student's needs. Our students also participate in the many activities
available to other students in the building in this environmental
magnet school setting.
Each classroom is a self-contained
setting with approximately 10 students in each class, two teaching
assistants and a teacher. All students participate in "academic
rotations", small group instruction to provide students to work to
their potential. The program emphasizes daily silent reading time and
writer's workshop. Academic emphasis as well as skill building is the
primary focus of our program. Classroom teachers are trainined in the
four blocks of literacy and writer's workshop.
The four blocks of
literacy include: self-selected reading, guided reading, working with
words, and writing.
The program has an intervention room to
assist the student in problem solving strategies. Each staff member is
trained in using the BEST System (Behavior Effective Skills Training)
and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Strategies.
The goal of the
program is to address each student's needs on an individual basis and
to work with the family to help the student integrate back into a least
restrictive setting. Students have the opportunity to participate in
the mainstream setting with peers when deemed appropriate by parent and
teachers.
